Drip irrigation or sprinklers: what should a property compare?
Irrigation choice depends on plants, soil, slope, wind, water quality, pressure, access, maintenance, and the person who will operate the system. Compare the application pattern and the whole system, not only the emitter or sprinkler price.
Map the planting and operating conditions
Record beds, lawns, crops, containers, slopes, shade, soil, wind exposure, access paths, and the times watering can occur. Separate zones with different needs instead of forcing every area onto one schedule.
Write down what the irrigation is meant to achieve and how the property will be checked when the weather, planting, or water availability changes. The operating plan matters as much as the hardware.
Compare how water is applied
Ask how water reaches the root zone, how evaporation and wind affect the system, and what happens to paths, walls, leaves, or areas that should not be wet. Drip and spray systems have different installation, pressure, filtration, and maintenance considerations.
Do not choose a method from a product label alone. The layout, spacing, pressure, water quality, and operating schedule determine whether the system delivers evenly.
Consider soil and slope
Ask how the soil absorbs water, whether slopes create runoff, and whether different areas need different run times or application rates. Drip can still create uneven results if emitters are spaced poorly or the water moves away from the root zone.
Sprinklers can cover open areas efficiently when spacing and wind conditions are understood, but overspray, evaporation, and uneven pressure need to be measured rather than assumed.
Check the source and controls
Record municipal, borehole, tank, rainwater, or mixed supply; measured flow and pressure; filtration; storage; pump capacity; valves; controller; and the response to a blocked filter, low tank, power cut, or leak.
Ask for a zone map, settings, parts list, maintenance schedule, and a simple way to identify a failed emitter, valve, pipe, sprinkler, or pump.
Price installation and maintenance
Compare design, trenching, tubing or pipe, emitters or sprinklers, filters, valves, controllers, pumps, storage, installation, delivery, water, electricity, flushing, repairs, and seasonal changes.
A cheap system may be expensive to operate when filters block, emitters need frequent replacement, or a leak is difficult to locate. Ask who can service the system and what parts are locally available.
Make the operator part of the decision
The person responsible for watering should be able to identify zones, isolate a problem, check the filter, change a schedule, and recognise when a plant is stressed or the system is overwatering.
Request a handover that includes valve labels, controller settings, zone run times, seasonal adjustments, maintenance dates, and the provider’s support contact.
Keep water-use and quality questions separate
A choice between drip and sprinklers does not answer whether the water is authorised or suitable for the intended use. Borehole, storage, treatment, and municipal requirements need their own checks.
