Borehole water quality is a measured property of a source and its intended use, not something that can be judged by appearance. Use a test report to decide what treatment, storage, plumbing, and maintenance questions need professional attention.
Start with the intended use
Write down whether the water will be used for drinking, cooking, bathing, laundry, irrigation, livestock, a business process, or backup supply. The acceptable risk and treatment decision can differ between uses, so a provider needs this context before recommending a test or product.
Do not describe water as potable merely because it is clear, has no obvious smell, or comes from a deep borehole. Treat suitability as an open question until the source has been tested for the intended use and the result has been interpreted by a suitably qualified person.
Separate source quality from system quality
Water quality can change between the aquifer, the borehole, the pump, the storage tank, and the tap. A sample from a tap may include effects from tanks, filters, plumbing, contamination, or a treatment device. Ask the laboratory or adviser whether the sample should represent the raw source, the treated water, or the point of use.
Keep a record of the borehole, sampling point, date, recent pumping, treatment status, and any unusual event such as flooding, drilling work, or a long period without use. Without that context, it is difficult to compare results over time.
Collect a sample that answers a question
Ask who should collect the sample, which container is required, whether the tap or pipe must be flushed, how the sample must be kept, and how quickly it must reach the laboratory. Follow the laboratory instructions rather than treating any clean bottle as a valid sample container.
If the question is about drinking water, say so before testing. If the question is irrigation damage, scaling, staining, corrosion, or a treatment failure, explain that as well. A useful test is designed around the decision it needs to support.
Read the report with context
A result should be linked to the property, source, sample point, date, method, units, and reference or guideline used by the laboratory. Look for results that exceed the relevant benchmark, results reported as absent or below detection, and comments that require confirmation or repeat sampling.
Do not select a filter by searching for one alarming number in isolation. A treatment decision may need chemistry, microbiology, flow, pressure, temperature, usage, and maintenance information considered together. Ask a qualified water professional to explain what the report does and does not establish.
Choose treatment around the measured problem
Treatment should address a defined problem and fit the required flow, pressure, storage, electrical supply, maintenance skill, and budget. Options may include filtration, disinfection, softening, removal of specific contaminants, or a combination, but the correct sequence depends on the report and the use.
Ask what happens when the filter blocks, power fails, a lamp or cartridge reaches end of life, or the water quality changes. Confirm which component protects drinking water, which component protects equipment, and which component is only for taste or appearance.
Protect the tank, pipes, and point of use
A treatment plan is incomplete if the storage tank is open, dirty, poorly located, or difficult to inspect. Check covers, vents, overflow routes, backflow risk, pipe materials, dead legs, cross-connections, and the separation between untreated and treated water.
Record where treatment sits in the system and label bypasses or isolation valves. A future installer or technician should be able to identify whether a tap is receiving raw borehole water, treated water, or a mixture.
Set a retest and maintenance routine
Keep the original report, treatment design, installation record, product specifications, settings, service dates, and follow-up results together. Record filter changes, cleaning, disinfection, pump work, rainfall or flooding, and any change in taste, colour, odour, pressure, or health concern.
The retest interval should reflect the source, use, treatment, local conditions, and advice from the responsible professional. A single historic result does not prove that the system remains suitable after equipment or conditions change.
