Questions to ask before buying a borehole pump in South Africa
A borehole pump is selected for a measured system duty, not only for the depth of the hole or the number printed on a product page. Collect the source, demand, pressure, electrical, storage, and maintenance facts before comparing equipment.
Collect the measurements first
Ask for the borehole depth, casing size, static water level, pumping water level, tested yield, recovery, and the date and method of the test. A pump that runs in a shallow water level may behave differently when the source is pumped for a longer period or during a dry season.
Keep the drilling log and pump-test result with the quote. If a provider cannot explain which measurements were used, treat the pump recommendation as provisional rather than as an engineered selection.
Define the duty point
The pump must meet a required flow at a required total head. That head can include lift from the water level, friction through pipework, filters and valves, elevation, pressure at the tap or sprinkler, and any storage or control arrangement.
Write down the normal and peak demand, the number of irrigation zones, the required pressure, and whether the pump fills a tank or supplies a pressurised network. Compare quotes at the same duty point so a larger-looking pump is not mistaken for better value.
Compare the complete system
A pump quote may exclude rising main, cable, control box, protection, non-return valve, isolation valve, pressure vessel, sensors, storage, filtration, installation, commissioning, and electrical work. Ask for a system drawing and an itemised schedule that makes the missing pieces visible.
Check whether the pump is intended for raw borehole water, treated water, irrigation, or a different application. Water quality, sand, scaling, and corrosion can affect equipment life and maintenance.
Ask about protection and failure modes
Confirm how the system responds to dry running, low water level, overload, voltage variation, blocked filters, a closed valve, a leak, and a power interruption. Ask whether the protection is installed, tested, and documented or merely recommended in the manual.
A pump that is technically large enough can still fail if it cycles too often, runs without adequate cooling, starts against the wrong pressure, or operates outside the source yield. Ask who diagnoses a fault and what information they need.
Plan storage and pressure deliberately
Storage can reduce peak demand and give the source time to recover, but it introduces tank hygiene, float controls, overflow, backflow, pump sequencing, and space requirements. A pressure system has its own vessel, switch, sensor, and maintenance questions.
Ask what happens when the tank is empty, the tank is full, the pressure drops, or the electricity fails. Confirm whether essential uses have a backup and whether the controls can be isolated without draining the entire system.
Check installation and commissioning
The installer should record the pump model and serial number, installation depth, cable and pipe sizes, protection settings, flow, pressure, current draw, water level, and any treatment or filtration settings. Keep the commissioning record with the warranty and service contact.
Ask whether the price includes lifting equipment, flushing, testing, electrical certification where required, and a return visit if the measured result differs from the design. A product sale without commissioning evidence leaves the most important assumptions unresolved.
Compare ownership cost
Include purchase price, installation, electricity, filters, service visits, replacement controls, retrieval of a failed pump, storage, and the cost of water interruption. Ask about warranty conditions, exclusions, response times, parts availability, and who performs the work in your area.
Do not compare a pump-only price with a complete installed system. Put each quote into columns for the same duty point and mark every item as included, provisional, or excluded.
